We had over 650 attendees with 31 exhibitors. Thursday was focused on children. We had some excellent speakers such as Zonya Foco, our own Dr. Gary Wheeler (from Arkansas Children’s Hospital), Ellyn Satter, and The Learning Station. Friday was geared towards the lifespan including worksite wellness. Mitzi Dulan, RD, did an excellent job discussing sports nutrition and the new dietary guidelines. She is a sports nutritionist for the Kansas City Royals baseball team and the Kansas City Chiefs football team. The conference was hosted by KIDS FIRST/UAMS Department of Pediatrics, the Blue and You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas and the Arkansas Department of Health with many other organizations co-sponsoring. Good Nutrition + Fitness=Healthier Children: Arkansas Childhood Obesity Conference September 4-5, 2003 The conference was a great success! 802 registered 30 vendors participated
Many people made personal lifestyle changes as well as taking valuable information back to the classrooms, schools, community, and to their families. One comment from a professor of pediatrics summed up the conference well. “The conference was wildly successful in my opinion. We are hitting the tipping point in Arkansas and the timing was incredible as so many folks came here to learn about BMIs which they did, but are now learning about all the other aspects of childhood obesity. There was a real “can do” attitude out there and I have to feel very optimistic about the public’s health.” Pictures from 2003 Conference
