On January 12, 2005, the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity and Child Nutrition Forum convened a Stake Holders Briefing on School Wellness Policies in Washington, DC. Over 150 people attended, from a broad range of organizations and several states. The local school wellness policies, a provision of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, are an important new tool to address obesity and promote healthy eating and physical activity through changes in school environments.  The webpage below includes materials presented at the briefing:

The National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) has developed a set of Model Local School Wellness Policies on Physical Activity and Nutrition to assist local school districts as they write and implement wellness policies, in accordance with the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004. In what truly has been a collaborative effort, 60 health, nutrition, physical activity, and education organizations, including the American Dietetic Association, assisted with or supported the development of these model school wellness policies.

The model policies are available at www.schoolwellnesspolicies.org

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has developed a new Website to help address the epidemic of obesity in America.  The site's home page is http:///www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/obesity.html.

The site provides tools for consumers to use to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle,  as well as information about FDA's recently announced program to combat obesity.  Special information addresses the important issue of childhood obesity.  The site also serves as a gateway to information on obesity and weight loss from other government agencies, such as the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
